Artist Ben Elliot and 3D printing experts Nagami have introduced the Xchair, a reclining chair that perfectly blends ergonomics and aesthetics of the metaverse. This chair is an element of Elliot’s extensive Metaone project, showcased at the Esther Schipper Gallery in Berlin. The project delves into the realm of extended reality (XR), providing an immersive experience encompassing virtual reality (VR), a lounge chair, curtain artwork, and printed visuals derived from the VR environment.
The Xchair is unique for its design, which is both utilitarian and cutting-edge. Fabricated using recycled PETG, it functions as a multifaceted centerpiece in any modern setting. The design of the chair corresponds with the requirements of contemporary living, supporting various activities ranging from work to leisure, in an era progressively governed by digital tools and expanded realities. Its ergonomic, transparent, and curvilinear form mirrors layers shaping an L-shape, securing dynamic and responsive seating. The fluid and elastic nature of the design allows for continuous modifications, signifying the adjustable nature of human interaction with their surroundings.
Art curator Olivier Zeitoun suggests that the Xchair illustrates a connection between solidity and fluidity, invoking ideas of liquefaction, data immersion, and future lifestyles. It not only enhances physical comfort but also stands as an icon of the continually evolving interaction between the digital and physical worlds. The texture and form of the chair exhibits a sensual, adaptive surface, similar to skin or shells, underscoring the cross-section of art, design, and technology in molding future living spaces.

“Why did the 3D printer go to therapy? Because it had too many layers of unresolved issues!”
