Formlabs has introduced a new Fuse Blast Unit for automated post-processing.

Formlabs has recently introduced a new addition to their SLS 3D printing ecosystem called Fuse Blast. This innovative post-processing unit not only cleans powder from completed prints but also polishes the parts. The big advantage of using the Fuse Blast is the significant time savings it offers, as operators can expect to save around 80% of their time. Furthermore, the Fuse Blast can complete a full cycle in just 15 minutes, which is truly impressive.

So, how does the Fuse Blast work? Formlabs explains that it provides both cleaning and surfacing within one system. It features automatic tumbling that eliminates the need for manual intervention, ensuring a thorough and quick removal of semi-sintered and loose powder. Additionally, an in-line ionizer prevents dust from settling back on the parts, ensuring that they are always clean to the touch.

One of the standout features of the Fuse Blast is its ability to execute pre-programmed finishing procedures. Operators can choose the most suitable routine based on the specific part situation, resulting in optimal results. This feature also greatly improves the consistency of parts from batch to batch, as the same post-processing steps are applied each time.

Although the Fuse Blast offers automation, there are still manual options available. For large parts that require turning, operators can step in and assist the Fuse Blast in a manual mode. Additionally, there is a fully manual mode where operators can clean the parts themselves. This mode is particularly useful for parts with complex geometries and hard-to-reach areas where removing powder can be tricky.

Another interesting innovation offered by Formlabs is the “Fuse Blast Polishing Systems”. This process utilizes a tumbler-powered system to polish part surfaces, resulting in a smooth finish. According to Formlabs, the polished parts have a semi-gloss finish and are ready for dyeing if necessary.

It is clear that Formlabs is focusing on providing solutions for production applications, as opposed to just prototyping. While prototyping aims to produce high-quality single prints occasionally, production entails running the equipment 24/7 and maximizing the number of parts produced to minimize costs. Formlabs has recognized that manual operations play a crucial role in the production process, and as a result, they have introduced various systems to automate their equipment. Already, their resin machines benefit from the “Automation Ecosystem”, which significantly increases resin part production throughput. Now, they are applying the same approach to their newer SLS equipment with the introduction of Fuse Blast.

The automation offered by the Fuse Blast will undoubtedly attract buyers looking for production implementations. What’s even better for Formlabs is that these customers often purchase multiple machines. Overall, the Fuse Blast is another testament to Formlabs’ commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for the 3D printing industry.
