US-based company Infinite Composites recently secured a $1.6 million contract with the US Army to develop conformable fuel tanks for hydrogen storage. This marks an important milestone in the effort to utilize hydrogen as an alternative fuel source for military and commercial vehicles, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The Department of Defense’s commitment to advancing hydrogen technology for military applications highlights the significance of this project.

Typically, hydrogen fuel is stored at extremely high pressures, ranging from 350 to 700 bar (5,000 to 10,000 psi), making the conventional cylindrical or spherical tanks limiting in terms of placement within vehicle designs. Infinite Composites’ proposal aims to reimagine the storage container for hydrogen fuel by creating conformable tanks with non-cylindrical geometries, offering greater flexibility and efficiency. This flexibility allows for strategic positioning of the tanks, even within the wings of aircraft, improving overall vehicle design.

Infinite Composites plans to manufacture these tanks using 90 percent additive manufacturing processes, making them lightweight and easily transportable. The tanks are made of advanced composite materials with nano-scaled reinforcements, providing strength and durability while maintaining a lightweight design.

The commercial interest in these tanks is already growing, with companies like Skydweller Aero and Empirical Systems Aerospace (ES Aero) considering their use in future vehicle designs. Infinite Composites has selected Skydweller as an initial commercial integration partner, further demonstrating the potential for hydrogen technology beyond military applications.
