Neighborhood 91 welcomes JEOL’s Electron Beam Metal 3D Printer as its newest resident.

In a groundbreaking development for the world of 3D printing and materials science, JEOL, a global leader in electron optics and advanced technology solutions, has unveiled its JAM-5200EBM Electron Beam-Powder Bed Fusion system at Cumberland Additive’s Neighborhood 91. Located at Pittsburgh International Airport, Neighborhood 91 is an advanced manufacturing production campus that is pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing.

The JAM-5200EBM made an impressive impact, achieving full operational status within a week of its arrival and assembly. Surpassing expectations, the JEOL team successfully executed an AMS 7032 compliant build just three weeks after installation. However, those who have been following the development of the JAM-5200EBM should not be surprised by its swift progress. Prior to being installed in the United States, the machine underwent rigorous testing at its manufacturing facility in Japan, confirming its adherence to AMS 7011 specification minimums for electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF) machines.

While initially focused on the production of titanium alloys, the JAM EBM system’s modular design allows for the production of Pure Copper and Nickel 718 alloy components. This expansion of manufacturing capabilities greatly enhances the overall potential of the Neighborhood 91 printing hub.

Dawne Hickton, CEO of Cumberland Additive, expressed excitement about the collaboration with JEOL and the future of advanced additive manufacturing at Neighborhood 91. She looks forward to harnessing the capabilities of the JAM-5200EBM E-Beam system to unlock new frontiers in materials science and 3D printing. JEOL USA President Robert Pohorenec echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the company’s journey into the additive manufacturing machine market.

Cumberland Additive joined the Pittsburgh collective in 2021, joining industry members that include Arencibia, Metal Powder Works, Wabtec, HAMR Industries, and Barnes Global Advisors (BGA). BGA, a key player in the neighborhood, has received grants from the Department of Defense that will likely contribute to its growth in the Pittsburgh location.

Although JEOL is still in the early stages of establishing itself at Neighborhood 91, the team is already looking toward demonstrating the AMS7032 build qualifications of the JAM EBM. On November 1st, JEOL will host a webinar to provide a comprehensive look at the capabilities and potential of this system. Additionally, live demonstrations of the JAM EBM system will be held at Formnext 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The collaboration between JEOL and Cumberland Additive represents a transformative chapter in additive manufacturing, driving innovation in materials science and 3D printing. The swift launch, remarkable performance, and versatility of the JAM-5200EBM system position it as a powerful tool for advancing manufacturing technology.
