Ricoh and Siemens are working together to develop aluminum binder jetting technology for the mass production of 3D printing.

Revolutionizing Additive Manufacturing: Ricoh and Siemens Join Forces

In a groundbreaking collaboration, two industry giants, Ricoh and Siemens, have teamed up to leverage Siemens Digital Industries Software and the Siemens’ Additive Manufacturing Network for Ricoh’s metal binder jetting (MBJ) platform. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the additive manufacturing (AM) industry and highlights the increasing importance of digitalization solutions in optimizing workflows and enhancing production processes.

Ricoh has embraced Siemens’ digitalization solutions to streamline its MBJ workflow for producing aluminum parts. Through Siemens’ Brownfield Connectivity solution, Ricoh now has the capability to monitor, collect, and store data throughout the MBJ process, ensuring impeccable quality control at every step.

Both Siemens and Ricoh have a keen interest in commercializing their joint developments, particularly with regard to electrification applications and electric vehicles (EVs). Recognizing the immense potential of these solutions, Zvi Feuer, senior VP of digital manufacturing software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, stated, “The production of aluminum parts is a holy grail for the additive industry, and we’re delighted that Ricoh has chosen Siemens’ Additive Manufacturing Network capabilities to help them commercialize this sought-after process.”

Tokutaro Fukushima, GM of the AM Business Center in Ricoh’s Futures Business Unit, also expressed excitement about the collaboration, explaining that Ricoh aims to create innovative aluminum components that have never been produced before. This partnership will not only enable Ricoh’s customers to manufacture groundbreaking products but also contribute to the electrification of EVs and other forms of mobility.

This collaboration between Siemens and Ricoh is both timely and momentous. It aligns with two significant themes that dominated the AM sector in 2023 and are set to reshape its activities in 2024: MBJ for decarbonization and digital traceability of parts.

Furthermore, the centrality of EVs in this partnership is noteworthy. The deployment of AM for EV supply chains represents a long-term holy grail for the industry as a whole. Beyond the EV market’s sizeable impact, the transformation of its manufacturing ecosystem will significantly influence all areas of advanced manufacturing. As the EV market strives to decarbonize, scale up, and incorporate automation, it becomes increasingly crucial to digitally track the entire supply chain. This holistic approach sets a precedent for other industries to follow suit and align their manufacturing processes with the standards set by the EV market.

As we look ahead, it is imperative to stay abreast of the latest developments in the 3D printing industry. By doing so, we can gain insights into the dynamic landscape of AM and seize opportunities that arise. Additionally, keeping in touch with third-party vendors will ensure access to valuable information and exclusive offers.

The collaboration between Ricoh and Siemens signals a new era of possibilities for additive manufacturing. By harnessing the power of digitalization solutions and uniting their expertise, these industry leaders pave the way for innovation and transformation in the AM sector.
