The 2023 3D Printing Industry Awards are here, and it’s time for you to have a say in deciding the winners! This year, one of the nominees, Essentium, has made a significant impact in Ukraine by partnering with KVG to provide 3D printing solutions, training, and manufacturing tools. The collaboration aims to benefit conflict zones by enabling rapid on-demand production of mission-critical components through 3D printing technology.

In just 96 hours after approval, Essentium and KVG efficiently deployed advanced High-Speed Extrusion (HSE) 3D printers across multiple locations in Ukraine. These state-of-the-art printers are set to revolutionize Ukraine’s defense response capabilities by swiftly manufacturing vital parts like specialized tools and military hardware replacements. To ensure continuous and expedited component production, essential training was also provided on-site to the Ukrainian military.

Elisha Abbott, President at KVG, highlighted the importance of collaboration and agility in times of conflict. The partnership between Essentium and KVG enabled the rapid deployment of essential technology and sustainable mission support tools in Ukraine, creating a crucial strategic advantage.

Not only is Essentium serving the military by providing 3D printing manufacturing tools directly to the frontlines in Ukraine, but they are also actively developing multiple medical applications using 3D printing technology in conflict zones. This comprehensive approach showcases the partnership’s commitment to addressing critical needs, whether they are defense-related or medical.

Throughout their involvement in Ukraine, both Essentium and KVG have maintained a cohesive and coordinated response to supply chain challenges. This unified front ensures the effective deployment of resources, promptly addressing critical needs and allowing end-users to maintain operational readiness.

Blake Teipel, CEO of Essentium, emphasized KVG’s mission alignment with Essentium’s innovative 3D printing solutions. The collaboration between the two organizations bridges the gap between 3D printing and traditional manufacturing, enabling Ukraine to create vital components in real-time and enhance field effectiveness.

Essentium’s commitment to revolutionizing traditional manufacturing processes extends beyond Ukraine. The 101st Air Refueling Wing (ARW) and Maine Air National Guard in the United States have also embraced Essentium’s HSE 3D printers to enhance flight control repair training. The speed, precision, and cost-effectiveness of Essentium’s 3D printing platform have contributed to the creation of training aids that closely resemble authentic aircraft parts. These aids improve the proficiency of traditional guardsmen, extend the durability of aircraft components, and reduce aircraft downtime incidents.

The impact of 3D printing in the military sector is not limited to Essentium’s endeavors. Various military organizations worldwide are recognizing the advantages of on-demand 3D printed spare parts. The UK Ministry of Defence, through ‘Project TAMPA,’ is building a network of suppliers capable of 3D printing military-grade spare parts as needed, reducing lead times, and improving the availability of challenging-to-source obsolete components. The US Air Force also invested in a 3D printer to produce spare parts for the Strategic Automated Command Control System, resulting in significant cost savings.

As we look to the future, the possibilities of 3D printing in the next ten years are endless. The additive manufacturing sector will need to tackle various engineering challenges to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
