The 2023 3D Printing Industry Awards celebrated excellence in additive manufacturing. Nominees and distinguished guests from the 3D printing world gathered in London to see who would win the specially created trophies.

The 3DPI Awards trophy has been designed by a member of the 3D printing community since they were launched in 2016, chosen through a design competition. Our gratitude is immense towards 3DPRINTUK for supporting the 2023 3D Printing Industry Awards trophy design competition as our production partner, Thangs, who hosted the design competition, and AnkerMake, who generously gifted the design competition winner an AnkerMake MC5 3D printer.

“AnkerMake is thrilled to see the fusion of creativity, innovation, and passion each creator brings to the 2023 3DPI Awards. The design competition not only showcases the exceptional talents of aspiring creators, but also pushes the boundaries of what is possible in 3D printer design. Our commitment is to enable artists, inventors, hobbyists, and DIY enthusiasts with a practical and seamless tool to bring their brilliant ideas to life. To every creative endeavor, congratulations.” said Frank Zhu, General Manager of AnkerMake.

After a lengthy discussion, the winning design was RWB Designs with their Tilted Hexagon trophy design.

“3DPRINTUK was proud to be chosen to sponsor the manufacturing of the awards and look forward to doing it again in the future,” said Nick Allen founder and director of 3DPRINTUK.

Commenting on the victorious design, Nick Allen offered, “There was an enormous assortment available for the 3DPI 2023 award competition, with the designs displaying exceptional aesthetics and intricate complexities doable only through additive manufacturing. The chosen final design was the best fit for the brief in terms of shape, manufacturability, and aesthetic value – kudos to RWB Design for it!“

3DPRINTUK is providing a 10% one-time discount available until 31st January 2024; enter the code “3DPI2023” to avail of the discount.

Paul Powers, who is the co-founder and CEO of Thangs, mentioned, “Being a collaborator with 3D Printing Industry this year and hosting the 3D Printing Industry Awards trophy contest was a delight. Witnessing the creative spirit within this group: designers merging printing methods, demonstrating technology, and spotlighting 2023 industry trends – was truly extraordinary.”

Thangs is giving the readers a “buy one month, get one month free” deal with the code “3DPIBOGO” – this offer is valid until December 31, 2023.

3DPI Awards 2023: The Winning Trophy Designers

Apart from scoring the top prize of AnkerMake MC5, Thangs also offered redeemable gift cards at Matterhackers or 3DJake, and promo codes to the next in line.

The award-winning trio shares insights into their creations.

RWB Designs, the champion of this contest, hails from an entrepreneurial background and prefers independent work over traditional employment. Fascinated by the power of creativity in 3D printing from a tender age, he turned his interest into a full-fledged occupation. A year back, he fused his entrepreneurial instincts with 3D designing abilities to establish RWB Designs, LLC. This platform serves as his canvas where he showcases his versatile 3D printable creations. His works range from home decor, artistic displays, toys to on-the-go print models, accumulating to a library of over 150+ designs.

Discussing his inspiration behind the trophy’s design, he stated, “Because this trophy was designed specifically for the 3D Printing Industry Awards, it seemed fitting to draw inspiration from the area of additive manufacturing. This idea took shape in the form of the trophy’s central pillars. Each pair of pillars is unique in both size and shape – none of them are identical, yet they all support the award’s plaque. These pillars represent the combined efforts of a multitude of companies, technologies, and individuals that have contributed to the rapid growth and innovation within this field. Despite none of them being identical, each one has played a significant role in the industry’s development.”

Regarding his future plans, in light of the AnkerMake MC5, RWB Designs stated, “I am incredibly grateful to the 3D Printing Industry for hosting the competition and providing the AnkerMake MC5 printer as a prize. Winning this printer has me very excited, and I can’t wait to use it to better my design work and breathe life into new ideas. With another printer under my belt, I’ll be able to iterate faster and carry out multiple projects simultaneously. This will give me more time to create even more complex and unique models in the future.”

In the 2023 3DPI Awards trophy design competition, the second place went to creatrixbritt, the Art Director at Fotis Mint. Creatrixbritt, who is based in NYC and has a hefty obsession with Star Wars, has spent this past year mastering the art of sculpting. Speaking about their high-ranking design, creatrixbritt said, “I opted for a design that integrated the looks of FDM (base), resin (body), and SLS (top). I selected a geometric design because they are universally popular in 3D Printing for hobbyists, and it provided a flat surface for the award inscription. The gem or body signifies the established part of 3D printing, and the lattice structure at the top symbolizes the innovation and boundless growth of our field.”

The third-place winner was Thomas, also known under the username GrizzledGnome. He shared, “My journey into modeling began in my senior year of high school. I went to a vocational school for half of each day where I studied pre-engineering and took classes that would prepare me for college. The curriculum included college algebra, physics, programming, and an introduction to 3D modeling.”

Thomas further added, “Getting deeply involved in 3D modeling or 3D printing was never part of my initial plans. However, three years ago, when I found myself with some surplus funds, I bought a 3D printer. I documented my journey with it on TikTok and it became a huge success. Now I have 1.3 million followers on TikTok. This success prompted me to return to 3D modeling and incorporate some of my own models into my content, with the hope of working totally remotely one day. Paul (Powers), the CEO of Thangs, invited my coworker and me to consider using Thangs and that’s why we’re here.”

Speaking about the trophy design, he explained, “I wanted to create something that was not just elegant, but also symbolized what 3D printing means to me. Although I primarily use FDM technology, I strongly believe that the potential and possibilities of 3D printing are all but limitless. If you have the idea, you can turn it into a physical product in your hand in record time with a nozzle, something I never imagined would be possible. It’s like sorcery, but of course, it’s not. Lol.”
